Animal Project and Research Links

Families,

We are beginning a very involved project that encompasses both Science and Language Arts. In upcoming weeks your child will be researching an animal of their choice.  They will learn about  physical characteristics, habitats, predators, and food sources.

Each student is working to complete a factual book in class. Additionally, each student is expected to complete at least one of the options on the Animal Project Choice Board that we’ve attached.  Please discuss with your Firstie which options he or she is planning to work on.

Projects from the Choice Board are to be completed at home, therefore we wanted you to have plenty of warning.

All projects, including the in-class portion, are due on Friday, May 13.  The concept of a due date is brand new to Firsties.  Please help us by asking your child about his or her progress often between now and then.

Thank you!

Mrs. Confer

Have someone interview you about your animal as if you’re an expert on the news.

Record it to share with the class.

Make a model of your animal using clay, legos, papier mache, or other materials.

Make a poster of your animal in its habitat.  Label it with any important information

Write poems about your animal. Choose two or more:

  • Cinquain

  • Limerick

  • Diamonte

  • Acrostic

  • Haiku

Build a diorama of your animal in its habitat.  Use whatever materials you’d like in order to show lots of details.

Make a comic strip featuring your animal.

Use Wixie or Google Slides to create a digital poster or book about your animal.

Write a letter to a zoo keeper in order to persuade him or her that they should or should not have your animal at their zoo.

Write a song about your animal. Be sure it includes plenty of facts.

Week 31 4/25-29

Field Trip

Hurray!  We will be going to Sarett Nature Center on Thursday, April 28 9:30-11.  We will ride the bus.  If you would like to meet us there, you are more than welcome to do so.  The cost for parents is $5.  This can be paid upon arrival at Sarett.

Animal Project

Choice Boards will be sent home Tomorrow ( Monday 4/25).  Please review these together and help your child decide which projects he or she would like to complete. The idea of a due date is brand new to Firsties.  We will discuss this in class and talk about pacing.  Please help us reinforce this idea.

Week 30 4/18-22

NWEA

Math testing dates: April 20 and 27

ELA testing dates: April 21 and 28

I try hard to make this a nonthreatening experience.  However, it is important that the children take the testing seriously so that we get the best information possible.  Please discuss this with your child and encourage them to do their best.  Many will need to be reminded that it’s not a race! Additionally, please do what you can to be sure your child is at school on those days!

Animal Project

First Graders will be VERY busy in the coming weeks researching an animal and creating a variety of projects to show their understanding of its physical characteristics, habitat, food sources, and predators.  I intended to send information home in your child’s Friday folder this past week, but the class wasn’t ready for this just yet. Please look for it this Monday instead.

Friday March 25th

Bring A Toy To School Day tomorrow!

We have earned a special day for our great listening during special classes.

Your child may bring a toy to school tomorrow - Friday March 25th.   I will not be here but Mr Reimers will be subbing.  It is supposed to be “Dress Like A Book Character Day” but I prefer that we skip this since I will not be here.

All toys must be labeled with your child’s name.

They will be able to bring out to play during choice time and possibly recess depending on the weather.

Please do not send toys with electronic components (battery operated or noisy), multiple pieces, something valuable or breakable.

Thank you.
